Now that India's TFR has officially dropped to 1.9, below replacement, I wonder what it must have been like in those days when it was above 4 or 5, when everyone knew someone with 10+ kids and had 20-30 cousins they knew very well personally. Those of us who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, even by then, never really got to see this. Maybe a few exceptions here and there, some orthodox Muslim family you randomly came across with seven children, or someone who had just moved from an interior village with four kids, but even those scenes are becoming very rare now, especially in the metros. If not for UP and Bihar, large parts of the country would already feel like a Japan or Germany type demographic crisis.
