With millions of teens using Instagram and being automatically placed into Instagram Teen Accounts, we wanted to see if these accounts actually create a safer online experience. Check out what we found.
🟡 NEW: Design It For Us, a youth-led group that advocates for guardrails on Big Tech companies, is releasing an ambitious 2027 AI policy platform

AI companies are racing towards fully automated AI research and development, with little care for the consequences.
That's why we created our 2027 AI policy platform -to ensure that AI’s benefits do not come at the expense of our future.
Historic!
This is the first time we're seeing enforcement action brought under an Age Appropriate Design Code in the country - @NEAttorneyGen sues OpenAI!
Excited to see AADCs protect and improve the wellbeing of young people across the country.
Co Chair Sebastian Mahal: “If OpenAI were serious about protecting young people, it would support strong, enforceable laws that hold AI companies accountable for how they design their products”

We applaud @CAgovernor for signing AB 1709 into law and for listening to young people to secure real accountability.
This bill goes after the root cause of the problem with social media, banning addictive features and feeds for under-16-year-olds.

Today, Governor @GavinNewsom signed Bill 1709 into law in California, requiring social media platforms to disable addictive design features by default for young users.
This law builds on the momentum from Meta’s landmark settlement last month, making clear that design-based protections — turning off autoplay, recommender algorithms, and infinite scroll by default — are the best path forward for young people's safety online. These protections address the root harm of causes in a durable way, while still allowing young people to access social media platforms.
In a press conference following the signing of the bill, Governor Newsom acknowledged the strength of the safety-by-design approach:
“This is about actually addressing the substantive issues around the engineering. If you address that, then the age issue is not the essential issue. And that’s what makes this truly a significant and consequential bill.”
We agree. And we commend Governor Newsom for signing this legislation into law and continuing California's leadership on kids’ online safety and tech safety-by-design. We encourage other states and the federal government to adopt similar design-based protections.
Thank you to @AsmLowenthal's tireless leadership on kids' online safety, and to our partner organizations like @DesignItForUs and EPIC who helped get us here.

So pleased to see how much @GavinNewsom gets this issue. On AB 1709, a restriction on addictive social media features and feeds for under-16-year-olds, he says:
"This is different than what Australia did. It's better than what they did...this is about the features themselves."
We're grateful for @CAgovernor's leadership in signing nation-leading design feature legislation. AB 1709 restricts addictive features and feeds for under-16-year-olds while still preserving access.

We signed on to this letter requesting that government frameworks for reviewing AI systems be public. When the risks are this high, transparency is imperative.

We should not allow a few AI companies to gamble with our future.
Congress needs to act to set guardrails around the AI industry that require transparency and accountability to prevent loss of control and other catastrophic outcomes.

As tech companies race to build self-improving models with critical safety incidents happening in real time, we’re grateful to Jacob Coxon for speaking out about his concerns with OpenAI, Anthropic, and the AI industry as a whole.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
