In many parts of Ireland and Scotland the Celts would open a door or a window would be opened at the moment of death, or immediately after it became clear that death had occurred, to allow the soul to leave freely. A soul that could not find its way out of the house would be trapped, and a trapped soul was not a peaceful one. The house that held a restless dead was a house shadowed by danger, because the unfree dead might return to cause harm, might interfere with the health of family members, might draw the still-living toward death out of something that was not malice so much as the gravity of the gone. Keeping the way clear was an act of mercy toward the dead and of self-protection for the living. The opened window was both farewell and release.
