Axtell wins the 1A-II state basketball championship as they defeat defending champion Cunningham, 57-39. Eagles undefeated against Kansas competition this year with their lone loss in Nebraska as they finished 25-1. Brandon Schmelzle of Axtell has consistently been one of the best three sport athletes in the state. The versatile senior can do it all. After earning two all-state 8M-II seasons at WR he moved to quarterback last season. On defense had had nine interceptions last season along with a kick off return and a punt return for TD. On offense, he had 1,571 passing (90/109 completions) along with 790 rushing for 50 combined touchdowns. In his career he has 1,716 passing, 2,044 rushing, 1,434 receiving. Schmelzle was the Sports in Kansas 8M-II Defensive POY in 2023. He’s also a standout in track and field, a multiple time Sports in Kansas all-stater in the sport. He was also an all-state pick in 1A-II basketball last season. Schmelzle is committed to KU to continue his 🏈 career.

All they do is win: Axtell has been incredible in the 1A/8M-II sports scene in recent memory. Third straight regional title (also won three straight league titles) and seven school records set this year. LJ, Shot Put, Discus, 4x400, 4x800, 110H, 300H. Just 47 total students in their entire high school. Over 1/3 of them pictured here. They’ve also won three state football titles in a row and haven’t lost since 2020. #sportsinkansas

One of the best athletes in the state: Brandon Schmelzle of Axtell (1A) set a new school record and TVL meet record in the Long Jump today. Brandon jumped 22-10 breaking the old record of 22-9 set by Fred Gee in 1991. He broke the old TVL track meet record of 22-8 set by Collin Jueneman in 2021. Schmelze is a 3x all-state 8M-II player from Sports in Kansas, earning 8M-II DPOY this past season. He is a rising FBS football prospect at ATH and holds an offer from KU. Axtell has just 47 students in its high school. #sportsinkansas
