This year, the 2nd day of Shavuot was Shabbat, so we read a holiday portion. To "catch up" we pair Chukat and Balak. Thus, this particular double portion is only read outside of Israel! (2/2)
Those of us living outside of Israel add an extra holiday (yom tov sheni) to Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. Whenever a holidays falls on Shabbat, we read a special holiday portion instead of following the Torah cycle. (1/2)
