The Low-Carbon Materials and Eco-Construction Training has come to a close, with participants from Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda taking home new knowledge and practical skills to support more sustainable construction.

During the Low-Carbon Materials Training in Tanzania, participants learned what to look for when selecting the right clays and laterites for construction - earth materials that are widely available across tropical regions and beyond.

The @UNDP-implemented ACP-EU @DevelopmentMin initiative is training participants from Uganda, Zambia, and Tanzania in low-carbon construction techniques. ⚒️🦺

In Uganda, four trainees have been equipped with material mixing methods and construction products that reduce carbon emissions and construction costs. They are now stepping up to train fellow Ugandans nationwide in these technologies to scale the impact! 🛠️🌱

During the Low-Carbon Materials Training in Tanzania, participants explored how agricultural waste could help reduce cement use in construction materials.

Participants in the Low-Carbon Materials Training in Tanzania are gaining hands-on experience producing stabilized earth bricks - one type of low-carbon building material. Compared with conventional fired bricks, they offer improved performance while helping reduce deforestation.

Responsible mining starts before mining begins.

Participants are learning how to reduce environmental, health, safety and community impacts while exploring responsible small-scale mining - from checking land ownership and permit requirements to sampling and testing.

Today, @UyangaG, Programme Manager of the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme - funded by the @EU and @PressACP , and implemented by @UNDP - opened the Regional and Tanzania Low-Carbon Materials and Eco-Construction Training.

Through the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme @DevelopmentMin, Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners is strengthening the capacity of artisanal and small-scale miners in Kikagati, Isingiro District. ⛏️🇺🇬

The training is equipping miners with practical skills in:
✅ Business planning
✅ Record keeping
✅ Regulatory compliance
✅ Safe mining practices
✅ Technical mining methods

This is part of a broader effort to extend technical services to mining communities across seven districts in western Uganda and Karamoja.

.@UNDP joined partners at the 6th Annual Great Lakes Mining and Energy Transition Mkutano to celebrate and recognize Uganda's best-performing Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) cooperatives for their commitment to responsible, inclusive and sustainable mining practices.

The awards highlighted cooperatives that are demonstrating leadership in strengthening governance, improving safety standards, promoting environmental stewardship and creating better opportunities for mining communities. Their achievements underscore the transformative role that formalised ASM can play in advancing decent livelihoods and community development.

On April 10, 2026, the expanded ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme’s Country Working Group (CWG) advanced the development of a Roadmap for a National Critical Minerals Strategy.

This high-level stakeholders’ dialogue explored governance, responsible investment for sustainable DVPT, & regional opportunities.

It brought together key actors across sectors, including the Ministry of Mines🇨🇲, other GVT institutions, private sector actors, DVPT partners, UNDP, the EU Delegation 🇨🇲, & technical experts. including representatives from #AMDC & the Uganda Chamber of Mines.
