The “real” rated R version of “Birth of Kitaro: Gegege Mystery” is coming to theaters October 4th. (Kitaro tanjo Gegege no Nazo)

This version re-takes 327 cuts and re- records the script. The director Go Koga states “this is the movie I wanted to make” and includes the horror visuals removed from the version screened last year.

Birth of Kitaro: Gegege mystery was released in November to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki's birth, and earned 2.79 billion yen at the box office.

It also won the Excellence in Animation Award at the 47th Japan Academy Awards.
