UPI became successful because it was simple, fast and free.

Now, if the govt introduces a reported 0.4% MDR on merchant payments above ₹2,000, things could change.

₹10,000 payment = ₹40
₹20,000 payment = ₹80
₹80,000 payment = ₹320

The charge may be levied on merchants, but the cost can eventually reach customers.

As @Ashneer_Grover pointed out, UPI is one of India's best innovations.
