Rubio in Congress: Kosovo's NATO Membership is Not at the Top of the Agenda

According to Rubio, NATO is focused on other, more important topics.

The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has assessed that at this stage, NATO expansion, specifically the admission of Kosovo into the North Atlantic Alliance, is not an issue that is likely to happen anytime soon.

During a congressional hearing attended by Rubio, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe, Congressman Keith Self, emphasized that there are four NATO member states blocking Kosovo's membership in the alliance, thereby requesting Rubio's help to push forward the issue of Kosovo's membership in this international organization.

On this point, Rubio emphasized that NATO is focused on other, more important topics and that Kosovo's membership in NATO "is not really at the top of the agenda," a conclusion he reached after conversations with several NATO member states.
"But that doesn't mean it will never happen, it simply means it is not a priority given these other points of tension. This issue has not been prominent in recent conversations with our NATO allies," he said.

Obstructing criminal proceedings is a crime under Kosovo law and the Law on Specialist Chambers and Special Prosecutor’s Office. If witnesses are discouraged from telling their stories, it is harder for judges to reach the truth.

So far in proceedings before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, 3 persons pleaded guilty to intimidation in criminal proceedings, 2 persons were convicted of intimidation, and 5 individuals are currently on trial accused of alleged attempts to influence witnesses.

According to Article 387 of the Kosovo Criminal Code “Whoever uses force or serious threat […], a promise of a gift or any other form of benefit to induce another person to refrain from making a statement or to make a false statement […] when such information relates to obstruction of criminal proceedings shall be punished by a fine of up to one hundred and twenty-five thousand (125,000) EUR and by imprisonment of two to ten years.”

I completely agree w @Glenn_Diesen here: we need to seek a negotiated end to the Russia/Ukraine war as soon as possible.

Russian attacks and statements of late imply something different is unfolding, and this war could escalate soon, possibly beyond Ukraine border into Europe. We must avoid having to face an Article 5 crisis that could lead us all into a hot war w nuclear armed Russia.

It is profoundly in our economic and security interests to end this war, quickly, before we get sucked in.
