@WHITE_VILLE@EcciusMaximus Catholicism’s favorite trick: grab the cutting-edge idea of the era, declare it dogma, then lock the door. Better frameworks arrive later? Too bad—they’re already 'settled. Heliocentrism anyone???
@CatholicDrip___ This cartoon just demonstrates Protestants do not believe what you claim they do. Notice panel 4 where he says "no"? Catholics dont want to understand, they just want to straw man.
I agree with you. There’s strong historical and biblical support for that position.
Scripture often speaks of the symbol and the thing it signifies as if they were one and the same. Baptism is representative of something far greater, and it can rightly be called salvific without the saving power residing in the symbol itself.
I understand why there has been some theological drift on this issue, and it makes sense that it appeared early. Developing sound theology from symbolism is not an easy process and I actually trust our literary criticism today over the early Church. (Ever read the Church Fathers??? Crazy stuff sometimes.) Being early is novel, but not necessarily better.
To answer your question about where people should go: pursue God in repentance and faith. Trust His Word, and seek out a community that takes that pursuit seriously. Trust God—let Him worry about the final count. You’re looking for something concrete to point to, but God’s Church is known to Him.
You are acting like Israel—mistaking yourself for the remnant.
