The Hawks in Mpumalanga have arrested 23 people, including senior government officials, in connection with a R114-million corruption case linked to the provincial Department of Education. The arrests are part of an ongoing takedown operation targeting 41 suspects implicated in corruption, theft, and fraud related to government tenders dating back to 2018.

Major General Nico Gerber, Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, confirmed that the operation involves multiple provinces, with some suspects still being pursued in the Western Cape, Limpopo, and Gauteng. Authorities say those already in custody are expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges of corruption, theft, and fraud.

The operation is currently unfolding across four provinces and is expected to continue in other locations over the coming days. The arrests represent a significant step in a long-running investigation into misuse of public funds in the Department of Education. Hawks officials are coordinating efforts to apprehend all remaining suspects in the case.

Authorities emphasised that the operation will continue throughout the day and potentially extend into the rest of the week. The full scope of the investigation is ongoing, and the Hawks have reiterated their commitment to holding those involved in government tender corruption accountable. The matter remains under active investigation.
