🚨Drumcree is not closed🚨

Michelle O’Neill and Sinn Féin can declare the Drumcree issue “closed” as often as they like. Saying it does not make it true. The right of the Portadown District to parade from Drumcree Church is not extinguished because one party finds it inconvenient.

A High Court ruling exposed serious procedural failures in the Parades Commission’s handling of the determination. The Orange Order has submitted a scaled-back application for a limited, silent parade of around 60 members. That is the democratic process working. Declaring the entire matter closed and telling residents they must simply accept permanent restriction is not dialogue. It is diktat.

First Minister O’Neill has every right to stand with Garvaghy Road residents. She does not have the right to rewrite the rules of engagement for everyone else. Unionism will not be lectured that its cultural traditions are permanently off the table while other commemorations continue without the same absolute veto. If Sinn Féin genuinely believes in talking, then come to the table. Mediation has been offered. The Order has indicated willingness to engage. Refusing to participate while announcing the issue is already settled is not leadership.

The PUL community has compromised for decades. We have watched routes restricted year after year. We have accepted determinations we disagreed with. What we will not accept is the permanent erasure of a traditional parade route by political fiat. Northern Ireland’s future is not built on one community permanently yielding while another claims the moral high ground and refuses to negotiate.

The Parades Commission must do its job properly and fairly. The courts have already shown where shortcuts lead. If Sinn Féin chooses not to engage, then the process will continue without them. The right to peaceful assembly and cultural expression is not theirs to cancel.

Drumcree is not closed. It is live. And Unionism will not be told otherwise.

Dolly Parton, what a wholesome and wholly amazing woman.

Visiting Ireland, she popped into a pub owned by Kerry Gaelic football legend Páidí Ó Sé. She came for a pint but ended up singing - her Coat of Many Colours, which told the story of growing up in poverty in a Smoky Mountains village. 

She was born in 1946, as much the rest of the world entered an unprecedented period of postwar prosperity - less so if you were one of 14 siblings born in a log cabin to a sharecropper who had never learnt to read.

And she gave so much of her money from music away - 100 million books, in honour of her father. One book a month to children participating in her Imagination Library, not only in the US but Canada, the UK, Australia, and even here in Ireland.

She campaigned strongly for gay rights, speaking out for same sex marriage from 2009 - not everyone in country music did. 

Her humour was self-deprecating and relentless. ‘I am a self-made woman, and I have the doctor bills to prove it’ was typical. (As was ‘I was the first woman to burn my bra—it took the fire department four days to put it out.’).

But even popping out for a quiet pint in the middle of Kerry she looked a million dollars - and was intensely aware of the shared musical past linking Appalachia and here. Hers, she said, was ‘Smokey Mountain DNA, but is from those old songs brought over from Ireland and England.’
