US India Tariff Cut to 18% Announced, But Port-Level Charges Still Higher

Trump announced tariffs on Indian goods are reduced to 18% and called the deal effective immediately. However, the new rate is not yet reflected in official legal systems like HTSUS, the Federal Register, or customs processing databases.

Because US customs can only apply tariffs that are legally in force, importers shipping goods right now may still face the previous higher duty at the border.

Once formal notices are issued and backdated, importers can file a Post Summary Correction PSC or a protest to claim refunds on excess duties paid.

In short, the 18% rate is active at the political level, but not yet fully operational in the customs system.
