South Korea now has the lowest fertility rate in the world — sitting at around 0.7 children per woman. That is less than half of the 2.1 replacement level needed to maintain a population.

The country is aging and shrinking at an alarming speed:

• Deaths are now outpacing births by a wide margin every year.
• The working-age population is shrinking rapidly while the elderly population explodes.
• Entire towns and villages are disappearing as young people leave and birth rates stay near zero.
• Some rural areas are already seeing schools close and local economies completely collapse.
Despite spending over $200 billion on pro-natal policies (cash incentives, housing support, parental leave, etc.), nothing has meaningfully reversed the trend. The birth rate continues to fall.
