I made 500k from my first design gig…
…but just last year, I was crying at 2 AM, jobless, and doubting if I was even good enough to be a designer.
This is the story I’ve never really shared before:
(Read this if you’re struggling)
In 2021, I stumbled on product design and randomly DMed @aydahnizzy to ask if he was into UI/UX. As at that time he had not dived into product design fully.
Coming from a medical field, I knew design is what I wanted and took the bold step. Learnt design. Practiced.
A few months later, I landed a B2B gig worth 500k.
Referrals started rolling in. I thought I had it all figured out.
At the same time, I was working as an assistant manager in a top company.
Corporate job by day, designer by night😂
But I knew design was the future I wanted.
Still, landing a 9–5 design role felt like chasing shadows.
So I stuck to freelancing… until I reached a breaking point.
In 2024, I resigned with zero backup. I told myself:
“If it’s not design, I’m not doing it.”
I came back online, Twitter, LinkedIn, communities.
But it was rough. No gigs for months.
I felt like the industry had moved on without me.
Imposter syndrome almost finished me.
One random night, frustrated and unable to sleep, I messaged @Joe_brendan_ .
I didn’t expect a reply. But he did and what he told me changed everything.
He said “You’re not struggling because you’re not good.
You’re struggling because the market is biased toward visibility.”
That hit like thunder. He sent me a YouTube video to watch.
From that night, I started studying visibility.
Watched YouTube like my life depended on it.
Posted everywhere, Twitter, LinkedIn, you name it.
Soon… people noticed. I got a gig via LinkedIn. Then another.
Eventually, I landed my first full-time remote role in product design.
Imagine being a designer for about 4 years but it was just freelancing, I was tired of freelancing, I needed a stable work most importantly that I could grow my career progressively. It’s only up from here🤭
