Every Independence Day, we celebrate the freedom our country fought for. We put up the tricolour, remember our freedom fighters, and proudly call ourselves Indians. But maybe Independence Day is also a time to ask ourselves some uncomfortable questions.

What does freedom mean if we refuse to take responsibility for the society we live in? What does patriotism mean if we litter our streets, damage public property, break traffic rules, or stay silent when things go wrong? And what happens when we repeatedly choose the wrong political leaders, ignore their failures, and then blame the entire system for the country's problems? Democracy gives us the right to choose but it also gives us the responsibility to choose wisely.

Civic sense, political awareness and patriotism are not separate ideas. They are all part of being a responsible citizen. This Independence Day, maybe patriotism should go beyond flags and slogans. Let's question. Let's think. Let's choose better. Let's do better.

Because a better India is not just a government's responsibility.
