Those who mocked The Indian Express investigation into the Election Commission’s handling of SIR should take a closer look at what has happened since.
The investigation raised specific questions about Form 6, ECINET, hearings and voters being left out. Since then, the EC has held multiple meetings and issued a series of decisions addressing several of precisely those concerns, including a special drive for “left out” voters in 20 states.
We don’t know what the EC’s last meeting looked like before the investigation. But what is striking is what has happened after it: meetings, reviews and course corrections on issues the investigation had put on record. That deserves scrutiny, not ridicule. @RitikaChopra__
The widest-reaching impact of @IndianExpress' Election Commission investigation yet.
10 days after our investigation into the rupture inside the Election Commission, the poll watchdog has told all 20 states where SIR is over to run a “special drive” to bring back voters “left out” of the rolls.
State CEOs have been told to identify voters deleted as unmapped or for “logical discrepancy” and that BLOs should go house to house to help bring them back. They will use Form 6 to apply for inclusion of such “left out” voters.
And the question added to Form 6 in July, asking whether your parents were on the last SIR roll, which one Commissioner called “unauthorised/illegal,” now applies only during the “SIR phase.”
What does that mean? In the 20 states where SIR is over, “left out” voters and first-time voters will use the plain statutory Form 6, without the question seeking details of their family’s link to the last SIR.

After #ExpressInvestigation which highlighted that 2 Election Commissioners raised 14 objections in 10 months on record to steps taken by Election Commission, the poll body issued a statement but the key questions remained unanswered. Listen in.

Yesterday, @IndianExpress reported an unprecedented rupture inside the Election Commission: TWO of its three members objecting on record, 14 times in 10 months, to decisions taken without their knowledge.
Today, the second part of our investigation looks at the concern Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi flagged most often: Who really controls our electoral rolls?
We followed that question to Goa, where we found something deeply concerning.

#ExpressInvestigation | SIR, which began in Bihar in June 2025, an otherwise routine clean-up of the rolls, has struck more than 13 crore names off the draft voter rolls in 30 States and Union Territories. This has put the Election Commission at the centre of intense public debate over its role in deciding who gets to vote — and who doesn’t.
An investigation by The Indian Express reveals that questions were raised on these very issues within the three-member Election Commission itself, time and again through much of this same period. By two of the three Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, no less.

The Election Commission of India is under fire like never before.
The SIR has struck 13 crore names off draft rolls, putting the EC at the centre of intense public debate over its role in deciding who gets to vote — and who doesn’t.
HOWEVER, what nobody knew: through that same period, some of the sharpest questions were being asked from inside.
Out today, after months of work. Our #ExpressInvestigation 🧵

I argue why a Commission of Inquiry under the 1952 Act is important for assessing the perennial nature of the damage.
