this is unreal. i cannot stop thinking about how many people will watch this ten years after it would have helped.

clayton christensen taught at harvard business school for thirty years. one afternoon he was walking down huron avenue in cambridge and got a feeling that the senior professor above him was about to leave, and that the job was going to be his. two weeks later the man announced he was leaving. christensen and his wife sat down and worked out what it would mean for them.

they gave it to someone else.

that is where all of this starts. he says he spent years afterwards on one question, which was what would actually make clay christensen's life worth living, and that the answer turned up somewhere he was not looking.

we have finite minds. nobody can hold every invoice, every cost, every person in their head, so we add them up into totals. that is not a flaw, it is the only way anyone holds a big world in a small head.

but totals can be ranked. and once there is a ranking, people quietly start believing that whoever is higher up it has lived a better life than whoever is below.

so a man ends up measuring his life by how high he climbed and how much he was paid. not because he decided those were the right things to measure, but because they were the two that were easy to add up.

nobody chooses the number they spend their life chasing. they inherit it from whatever happened to be countable.
