Do I really need $1,800,000 to retire? (Part 2 of 3)
We are looking to solve how much should you have saved at different ages. Again, assuming $1,800,000 is an appropriate amount to meet your retirement goals. We assumed the following conditions:
๐ making a $22,500/year 401k contribution (max for 2023) until age 65
๐ assuming an 8% average rate of return
To find out how much should be in an investment account at each age as your progress to age 65. Here are the results:
๐ ๐๐
Age 64 (1 year away) - $1,644,166.67
Age 63 (2 years away) - $1,499,876.54
Age 62 (3 years away) - $1,366,274.58
Age 61 (4 years away) - $1,242,569.05
Age 60 (5 years away) - $1,128,026.90
Age 59 (6 years away) - $1,021,969.35
Age 58 (7 years away) - $923,767.92
Age 57 (8 years away) - $832,840.67
Age 56 (9 years away) - $748,648.76
Age 55 (10 years away) - $670,693.30
Age 54 (11 years away) - $598,512.32
Age 53 (12 years away) - $531,678.07
Age 52 (13 years away) - $469,794.51
Age 51 (14 years away) - $412,494.92
Age 50 (15 years away) - $359,439.74
Age 49 (16 years away) - $310,314.57
Age 48 (17 years away) - $264,828.31
Age 47 (18 years away) - $222,711.40
Age 46 (19 years away) - $183,714.25
Age 45 (20 years away) - $147,605.79
Age 44 (21 years away) - $114,172.03
Age 43 (22 years away) - $83,214.84
Age 42 (23 years away) - $54,550.78
Age 41 (24 years away) - $28,009.98
Age 40 (25 years away) - $3,435.17
Were these results what you expected?
It's possible, but it isn't easy and it takes time and patience.
Remember, here are some questions to ask yourself in order to arrive at a more appropriate retirement number to meet your cash flow needs:
What are my financial goals?
How should I prioritize them?
How much is my steady state of spending?
Will my spending change over time?
What other income sources will I have?
Do I want to "retire" at 65?
There are many more questions to ask yourself in order to craft your version of financial independence (retirement). After you ask yourself these questions (and more), the number you arrive at might be very different than $1,800,000.

@Rainmaker1973@grok can you explain if these claims are true and describe the support (chemistry) for why this mixture of fruit is beneficial to the human body?
@AOC Convenient, you choose a regulated, high cost industry as support for why a wealth tax is needed.
Wealth transfers donโt help bring down costs.
Incentivizing *insert high cost industry* to bring down costs, through competition is how you benefit all.
