In 1973 I began helping people harmed in extremist authoritarian sects.
OTD in 1984, I founded the DialogCentre UK to give a clear identity and more structure to my work.
Forty-one years later, the purpose is unchanged: Recovery and Growth after Spiritual Abuse.

Is there any investigation into the all-consuming attempts by the #PlymouthBrethren at electoral interference in Australia’s democratic processes? This is a secret & regressive sect masquerading as a church with all the tax benefits this status bestows.
@smh with thanks.
Evil rarely announces itself.
Hannah Arendt didn’t warn us that the greatest danger would come from monsters.
She warned us it would come from ordinary people who stop asking questions. People who trade conscience for slogans, curiosity for certainty, and morality for obedience.
The lesson of the Holocaust was never just about one man. It was about what happens when a society decides that thinking is optional.
Every generation believes it would have stood against evil.
History keeps asking the same question:
Would you have?
Or would you have simply gone along because everyone else did?
That’s why Arendt still matters. And that’s why this conversation matters. Because the opposite of evil isn’t outrage.
It’s the courage to think for yourself.
“The ideal subject of totalitarianism... is people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.”
— Hannah Arendt
These U.S. Cabinet members are praising Trump in ways that sound more like devotion than governance.
As someone who has spent decades studying cults, authoritarian leaders, and undue influence, I've seen these dynamics before.
Malignant narcissists like Trump often surround themselves with loyalists who reinforce their worldview and rarely challenge them. Healthy leadership welcomes disagreement and accountability. Cult leaders and authoritarian personalities tend to demand loyalty, punish dissent, and create environments where people feel pressured to constantly validate the leader.
What concerns me isn't simply political disagreement; it's the psychology behind MAGA cult identity and how group loyalty can become more important than facts, conscience, or independent thinking.
When people become immersed in an information bubble, and their identity becomes fused with a movement, it becomes much harder to evaluate new information objectively. That's how undue influence works. It shapes how people interpret reality, whom they trust, and what they are willing to overlook.
I've spent my career helping people leave cults and high-control groups, and I've seen firsthand that when individuals reconnect with their own values, critical thinking, and authentic selves, transformation is possible.

Whether or not this new $250 treasury bill ever happens, I believe the conversation itself reveals something important about personality cults, narcissism, and leadership.
One of the hallmarks of a cult of personality is the constant need for admiration, validation, and symbolic displays of loyalty. When a leader becomes the center of attention, criticism is discouraged, and followers are encouraged to elevate that person above institutions, it should raise important questions.
This is why I developed the BITE Model, to help people identify patterns of behavioral, informational, thought, and emotional control across political, religious, and ideological movements.
Whether we're discussing Trump, high-control groups, or even examining concerns raised by former Mormons and other faith communities, the key question is always the same: are people being empowered to think for themselves, or are they being shaped by undue influence?
Democracy depends on independent thinking, accountability, and citizens who are willing to question authority.
What do you think? Should any living president appear on U.S. currency?

For decades, Wheaton College knew former administrator Dennis Massaro had sexually assaulted students but stayed quiet. Then, in 2024, as an alumnus was pressuring the college to come clean, the college commissioned a "review," telling constituents new information had come to light.
But Wheaton alumnus Chris Fritz says President Phil Ryken didn't learn anything he hadn't known for decades. And when trustees learned the truth, they opted to send a deceptive and incomplete statement to alumni, faculty, staff and students.
In this exclusive interview with Julie Roys, Fritz shares what he witnessed firsthand, why he believes Wheaton has failed survivors, and why he's still fighting for accountability more than 30 years later.

@DAlperovitch Putin is an example of how any ideology, whether religious, technological, economic, or political, can be turned into a destructive system. Extremist authoritarian sects are born from our fears & insecurities, what he called our "mentality", & end in domination & exploitation.
#Scientology's abuses are recorded in decades of court documents and journalistic exposes. But how does the church reassure politicians that it's all overblown? We have a stunning example of that in a new document obtained by Alex Barnes-Ross! https://t.co/EisSyepLZL
In rising McCarthyism, it was 'a breathtaking concoction of lies, vituperation and wild allegations': Check out the wildest moment during #Scientology founder L.Ron Hubbard's vendetta against his 2nd wife, something they don't tell you about in the church. https://t.co/DjkoTG8zFu
Just out is Peter #Staudenmaier's review (in English) of German historian Anne Sudrow's research.
Her study details how #biodynamics was practised by #Anthroposophist SS #Nazis in #Dachau & other camps. Skin-care firm #Weleda involvement was also exposed

Things are heating up in Clearwater over #Scientology’s latest takeover attempt, and we’re fortunate that Mark Bunker is keeping an eye on it. He gives us a detailed account of last night's odd meeting between Scientology's cutouts and Mayor Bruce Rector. https://t.co/3uCNLcTd8B
Is it weird that MAGA cultist Lance Wallnau is laying hands on and praying over cardboard cutouts of Donald Trump and Elon Musk? Because it seems kinda weird.
After escaping a cult with nothing but the clothes on your back, reclaiming life is a monumental journey. It means going from survival mode to rebuilding from scratch, yearning for the 'normal' life you always dreamed of. Full video: https://t.co/LEkGDfloRB
Tony Ortega tells Jon about how Romey Beliles was trapped by false promises and hard-sell techniques - ultimately leading to his untimely end. Another reason we speak out against the #scientologycult .
As on past Memorial Days, we think it’s important to remind readers about #Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s ‘stolen valor.’ Historian Chris Owen looks at Hubbard’s claims about being injured in war versus the actual record. https://t.co/s4LEdEDB6O
"A New Jersey man accused of being a cult leader controlled members through fear, starvation, forced labor, and sex for more than a decade, and has continued to exert his control over some of them even behind bars, prosecutors allege in court records obtained by USA TODAY.
"Treva Edwards, 61, founded and ran a church named Jesus is Lord by the Holy Ghost in the Newark suburb of Orange. He's charged with two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, three counts of forced labor, and conspiracy to commit forced labor, according to a superseding indictment filed in federal court on Tuesday, May 19. His wife Christine is charged with conspiracy to commit forced labor."
