This young woman was the exchange student of a friend of mine when she was a teenager. So many people have been worried about her, and are relieved she made it out of Mariupol. Her father is still missing, however.
"There is no gas, no electricity, no heating, no cell phone service. We melt snow to have at least something to drink.”
A Ukrainian refugee from Mariupol recounts the dire situation she fled.
@NatalieKBOI I didn’t realize you reported for @WDAYnews when you were at Medill — so did I! (A decade earlier, LOL.) @AlAamodtNews was the best! I also covered the courts in my Chicago semester. Congrats on your retirement!
Happy New Year! Hope you enjoy this lively discussion with the inimitable @susanorlean as much as I did. https://t.co/IchqT5Nfxr #sunvalleywritersconference
Fascinating fact from @Catherine_Katz, who will be my guest on Friday, Dec. 17 at 8:30 PM. We’ll talk about her book, “Daughters of Yalta,” including that “cool gal,” who also has a lot of connections to Idaho!
Not only is today the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, it is also the birthday of one very cool gal, Kathleen Harriman, who would have been 104 today 🎂 On Dec 7, 1941, she was celebrating her 24th birthday at dinner with the Churchills when they all learned about Pearl Harbor
5) Still, he encouraged students to go into diplomacy. “Take the Foreign Service exam. Your nation needs you to clean up this awful mess our generation has left you.”
🧵1) Former Amb. to Afghanistan #ryancrocker, speaking Tuesday at @uidaho’s Martin Institute, excoriated @POTUS for his withdrawal from Afghanistan, and gave a dire prognosis of what may be to come.
4) He was particularly concerned about the status of girls and women in Afghanistan, saying “it pains me” that there aren’t more “progressive voices” in the US speaking up about women’s rights there.
@IdahoLark Interesting - I also took screenshots last night of three air ambulances flying to or away from Boise at the same time, including that one. Two went over my house. I often see them coming from the Weiser area, as well as eastern Oregon. Last night, one was headed towards Burley.
Incredibly sad news for @NPR and journalism. @nealconan was an extraordinary journalist who was a ‘founding father’ of our public radio system. His hosting skills were miraculous and he could hold the air and distill complex issues live for hours on ‘Talk Of The Nation’. RIP.
@maggieKTVB7 Had to do it in Id. Falls in 1989. Man had died in single plane crash. Was told to knock on wife’s door. I told her immediately that she didn’t have to do interview. Amazingly, she decided to do it. But I left commercial news bec. of assignments like that.
@gracyolmstead@jwmjournalist Oh, my goodness, my grandfather was a small-town attorney and banker in Uniontown, PA! I wonder if Mr. Storey ever wrote about him! Surely he knew him.
