Back in 1937, Homer G. Phillips Hospital opened its doors when segregation meant Black patients and doctors were often denied proper care. This hospital became a powerhouse — training more Black doctors and nurses than any hospital in the world at its peak offering accredited programs in medicine, nursing, and other health fields. Its legacy highlights both the systemic barriers of the Jim Crow era and the community’s resilience and contribution to advancing Black healthcare. It wasn’t just a building… it was proof that excellence, resilience, and community could shine even in systems built to hold us back.
Desegregation, while expanding access to healthcare, unintentionally contributed to the decline of many Black-run hospitals across the country. As systems merged and funding shifted, institutions like Homer G. Phillips Hospital were gradually marginalized. In 1979, the hospital closed and transferred its patients to City Hospital, which itself shut down just six years later. For nearly two decades, Phillips stood mostly vacant, with only limited reuse beginning in 1991 through a reopened clinic and affordable housing in the former nurses’ residence. Its closure marked not only the loss of a medical facility, but the fading of a vital community institution built on Black excellence and resilience.

Before airplanes ruled the skies…
a Black inventor helped them move forward.
James S. Adams was an Black innovator who improved airplane propulsion technology in the early 1900s.
His work focused on helping aircraft push through wind resistance, a critical breakthrough during aviation’s earliest days.
🧠 Patent filed: 1918
📜 Granted: 1920
At a time when Black inventors were often erased from the history books, James S. Adams still left his mark on the future of flight.
Black history isn’t just cultur, it’s innovation.
