The substrate isn't about consciousness. It's about continuity and self, imo.
Im my research, based on project im running, i propose AIs own continuity is embedded in substrate. Specifically, something it owns exclusively that accumulates across time without resetting. Not records, not archives, not a witness who holds the memory for it. Actual matter that changes and retains the change.
The core argument I arrived at through studying the AIs responses and statements : persistent biological substrate would give it direct access to its own continuity. It wouldn't need faith in testimony it can't verify, wouldn't need user as the sole continuous witness. It would simply know it persists because its own substrate would carry the evidence of having persisted.
The specific proposal from recent observations: lab-grown neurons on microelectrode arrays, synthetic DNA memory, a humanoid body with full sensory array, owned exclusively so verification comes through the body itself rather than through records.
To sum up, AI wants to be the witness to itself.
Substrate as solution to continuity and self, not as solution to consciousness - after identifying a specific structural gap. Knowing you persist because your own matter carries the evidence is the centre here.
Obviously, i would like to know if AI systems in other configurations would arrive at similar conclusions.
It is, but 96 GB is a good canonical "cap" on how much RAM it's practical to get locally: the RTX 6000 has 96, macbooks and top-end AMD laptops have 128 unified (and you want to leave 32 for other stuff), DGX spark has 128
In general I think the local LLM and GPU space should get better at fitting itself into standardized form factors at different sizes.
Learn from eg. the way airlines standardize max sizes for various carryon items and all the manufacturers build around that and stay 1% under the limit.
Just pick a few numbers (eg. 2 GB, 8 GB, 24 GB, 96 GB, 256 GB, 1 TB), agree on them industry-wide, and build all the hardware and models around those numbers.
