In 1944, Bertha was 63 and widowed. Her eight living children were Ona, Lloyd, Effie, Omar, Walter, Edith, Ina, and Elmer. Her son Clyde had died of meningitis before his second birthday. Elmer had enlisted in the Army in 1942. Her granddaughter Viola often lived with her.

I come past Edith went home come up to Bertha staid a while Mr Eldridge brought me to Inas Ina and both childrens has the measles.

I went Edith went to Sharkey & Bertha this eve back to Fred we all went to Willie Gregory to night & to Omars. Chester took Omar Cooper home with him to see if he took the measles

I made my feed sack Blouse. this evening I quilted to night Chester folks & myself all went to Mrs. Cooper. I got a letter from Ruby telling that Invasion in Europe June 6, 1944 Jimmie Jameson oversea but he wasn't killed.

I ate dinner at Bertha Hiram took me to Flemingsburg I come on to Ona this eve. Thelma took Helen had a tooth pulled. We all went to Clyde to night Eugene & Allie was there.
