Why do we always see Wikipedia at the top of Google’s search results?
And no, it's not just because of backlinks. A lot of sites have millions of backlinks.
Heck, Twitter even has a higher domain authority than Wikipedia.
But Twitter generates roughly 676 million organic visitors versus 2.1 billion for Wikipedia.
We all know that if you don’t have content, it’s hard to get SEO traffic.
But creating content isn’t enough.
Every day you are competing with 4.6 billion pieces of new content that are being pushed out to the Internet.
But the content that does well, tends to be fresh and updated.
Just ask yourself, would you rather read a 3-year-old piece of content or something that is 3 days old?
Of course, you are going to pick the 3-day-old piece of content.
It’s why Wikipedia ranks for everything… just search for anything on the Internet in any language, and you will see Wikipedia.
The reason is because their content is continually updated by the community.
When we analyzed websites that grew their SEO traffic by at least 50% a year consistently for over 4 years we found that they also spend a lot of time updating content, versus creating new content.
So how often should you update your content?
Well, the answer lies in your Google Search Console.
Once you log into Search Console and select your domain.
Then click on “Search Results” in the left-hand navigation.
Then click on “Pages”, which can be found above the table filled with results.
And finally, click on “Date” which can be found at the top of the chart.
Once the date picker loads, click “Compare” and then click “Compare last 3 months to previous period” and hit “Apply”.
Look for the pages that lost impressions and lost clicks.
Those are the pages that are losing rankings.
Go in there and update those pages.
Those are the ones that are falling behind the competition, which is why they are losing rankings.
And when updating, don’t just update a sentence or two or even just an image.
Think about what would be most beneficial for the end user. Make the changes that would delight them.
