For years, I hid behind my brand and rarely allowed PR that mentioned my name as the owner. Imagine building a fast-growing local brand, fully legally, yet choosing to remain in the shadows because of professional employment restrictions.

Even at widely publicized events, brand ambassador signings, or sponsorships, I found ways to keep my name off the front page. Here’s why.

As a KPMG staff member, owning a business or engaging in outside employment was heavily restricted (see compliance disclosures). At the same time, I quietly enjoyed watching a brand I launched with my savings and income grow into a national household name without any fanfare. I built it on a moonlighting schedule and bi-weekly 72-hour weekend trips to Nigeria. It was simply a side hustle I never expected to scale as fast as it did.

One morning, I was called into Partner Andy’s office over an HR violation. My boss, Paul, a Senior Director, asked in his ex-military voice: “You’ve been flagged for outside employment. I need you to come clean with me.”

I paused, then replied calmly: “I only have a small business in Nigeria. I’m not engaged in outside employment.” I was an emerging leader with a stellar record and top-tier performance.

He laughed and said, “You’re all over the internet, and that looks nothing like a small business.”

He instructed me to complete the forms forwarded by HR. A panel would review and decide. He advised me to update my CV as a backup. “People get fired for this.”

I pondered it carefully. This was a retail business in Nigeria. It neither affected my U.S. employment nor competed with KPMG or any clients.

As I filled out the forms, the strict language and restrictions became clear. I consulted a few lawyer friends who gave solid advice on how to respond. I also called a few partners who were mentors. One in Atlanta told me bluntly: “You have to choose — career growth at KPMG or this business. Are you in business for profit, or are you building legacy? You cannot build a real legacy at your business and at KPMG at the same time. Something has to give.”

With a nice, plush salary, benefits, and a promotion on the horizon, the answer became clear. It would require moving to Nigeria. I eventually scaled the HR and compliance process with support from leadership at the Nashville office, but I knew my long-term career growth would be limited.

They do not fancy the idea of “two masters.” Later that year, I turned in my resignation.

I later discovered that a young associate had been searching social media profiles for a company event, and the articles online spilled the beans. A Director I never got along with, Tom, championed the reporting of the violation. That 90-day investigation left me in one of the most terrifying periods of my professional life. I made myself a hard promise: when I eventually resigned, my business could not fail for any reason under the sun.

Today, I still find it difficult standing fully in front of the brand. I prefer to let the products and customer experience do most of the talking. I am gradually learning to embark on personal branding that aligns with the brand. Forget my accidental foray into activism & politics, I have always enjoyed existing behind the curtains.if I had my way, I will prefer a quiet profile, but alas we are here.

I have made many mistakes and equally recorded notable successes in Nigeria’s tough business climate transforming the business into the most prominent eyewear retailer of premium and authentic products. I remain grateful for the journey and believe the best is still ahead. The current economic signals are far more encouraging, and I hope they remain this way.
