The manutara is the sacred bird that is honored by the inhabitants of Rapa Nui. You can find it painted and carved all over the island.

Every year there was an event, the bird-man competition, where participants descended the cliffs near Rano Kau volcano, and then would swim to the islet of Motu Nui to obtain an egg from the manutara. They would then have to swim back, without breaking the egg. The first to do so would be named leader of the clan for a year.

It seemed appropriate to include this important iconography on the map I’ve been working on…and what better place than the compass?
