On Friday, the Pentagon posted what it described as “new, never-before-seen” files, 162 documents, photos and videos related to UAPs from all over the world. These emanate from NASA, the FBI, the Pentagon and the State Department (but notably NOT from the CIA, NSA, NRO or DOE). They’re all said to be “unresolved” cases from between 1972 and 2026, portrayed as the first tranche of many more to come on a rolling basis. The president urged interested citizens to “enjoy” and make up their own minds.

Just in the past week, both NASA and the FBI have confirmed they’re investigating possible connections between a dozen missing and deceased government scientists. “Some of them were very important people,” President Trump said in announcing the probe.

This newsletter has closely examined the cases of General Neil McCasland and Monica Reza, whose specialties overlapped and who both vanished on their customary daily hikes. Recently, the list of mysterious disappearances and deaths has grown to include Joshua LeBlanc, a nuclear propulsion engineer for NASA killed in a fiery car crash on July 22, 2025. LeBlanc worked at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. His family had reported him missing on the morning of his death, worried that he had left behind his phone and wallet and speculating he may have been kidnapped.

An open letter to U.S. Representatives Anna Paulina Luna @realannapaulina and Eric Burlison @RepEricBurlison :

As leading members of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, you have been outspoken advocates for transparency on long-withheld government secrets. I’m writing today to outline why still-secret CIA and FBI files concerning Richard Case Nagell could prove vital to finally understanding who was behind the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

On September 20, 1963, two months before that tragic day, Nagell walked into a bank in El Paso and fired two shots into the wall in order to get himself arrested and placed in federal custody. He maintained that he’d sent a registered letter to J. Edgar Hoover a few days earlier, providing enough information to warrant the arrest of Lee Harvey Oswald and two Cuban exile associates with CIA connections. The FBI claimed in 1976 that no such letter could be located. Quite likely, Hoover destroyed it - but who knows?

Upon his arrest outside the bank, among other items the authorities took possession of two small brown spiral notebooks. One has never surfaced. The other, released to Nagell’s lawyer in 1975, contained very similar notations to what would later be found in Oswald’s address book - the Fair Play for Cuba Committee and the phone number of the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City. Both of those were targets of clandestine CIA operations.

Nagell told authorities that the lining of his suit jacket held two tourist cards for entry to Mexico. One was his, under a false name. The other was for a “Hidel,” a pseudonym used by Oswald. Whatever happened to these tourist cards should be pursued.

Here is further evidence of Nagell’s relationship with Oswald, whose activities he had been assigned to monitor by his CIA case officer. This appears in the photo insert section of my book “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”

At his arraignment on a charge of “attempted bank robbery” on November 4, 1963, according to arresting officer Jim Bundren, Nagell told him he “wouldn’t want to be in Dallas right now.” He is on record as requesting to meet with the Secret Service “as soon as possible” while imprisoned on the day of the assassination. Nagell dispatched a letter to Secret Service Chief James Rowley as well. The FBI visited him on several occasions.

Then a new judge abruptly took over jurisdiction for Nagell’s trial. His name was Homer Thornberry. A close friend of LBJ, he had been in the presidential motorcade on November 22, and afterward he suddenly resigned his seat in Congress and went to El Paso. There Thornberry shut down Nagell’s efforts to describe his motive for entering the bank. “Suspect Says Agents Asked Him about Oswald, Activities Link,” the El Paso newspaper headlined on January 27, 1964. But that was as far as it went. Any record of how Thornberry became involved with Nagell’s case should be sought.

I know that Nagell was eventually able to obtain a thick sheaf of his CIA files under the Freedom of Information Act. These, however, were personal records that have never been publicly released. Nagell died under suspicious circumstances in 1995, and it’s high time this material sees the light of day.

Files should also be sought under two aliases that Nagell used in 1962-63: Robert C. Nolan and Joseph Kramer. And under Oswald’s pseudonyms of “Albert” and/or “Alek Hidel (or Hidell).” The same Hidel pseudonym was an operational name also used by Nagell under some circumstances.

While Army Intelligence released some years ago its files on Nagell’s service in Japan, there may also be relevant material in the Defense Intelligence Agency. A highly decorated Korean War veteran, Nagell had been part of a top-secret military unit known as Field Operations Intelligence (FOI) established by General Charles Willoughby and another of whose members was a hitman named Jack Canon. Files on both Willoughby and Canon should be examined for their connections to the assassination.

In closing this request, I avow that I knew Nagell personally as an investigative journalist and spent a number of hours asking questions of him in the mid-1970s. I have authored sixteen books, three of which focus on the assassination, and served as the research expert on the “Who Killed JFK?” podcast produced by Rob Reiner and Soledad O’Brien. I am hopeful that as Congress members following through on releasing all the classified files that various agencies have kept secret for years, you will see fit to include the remaining documents about Richard Case Nagell. Nancy Mace sent a request to the CIA requesting the agency release “any and all documents” related to the deceased Jeffrey Epstein and his imprisoned girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell. “Classified or not, we want to see it,” wrote the member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Mace specifically referenced a 2015 document included in the Justice Department’s file release from an email Epstein once sent to his attorney saying: “It looks like a CIA drop.” Mace also brought up Epstein’s three 2014 scheduled meetings with William J. Burns, then a deputy secretary of state who temporarily became CIA Director in 2021 prior to President Trump’s election.

At the beginning of the year, I wrote a substack focusing on the senseless killing of MIT professor Nino Loureiro in the foyer of his Brookline, Massachusetts home. The scientist, according to London’s Daily Mail “was leading MIT’s efforts to revolutionize energy production by making a game-changing clean power source that needs just a fraction of the fossil fuels current machines and vehicles use today.” The 47-year-old Loureiro, director of the university’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, had also researched “complex problems lurking at the center of fusion vacuum chambers and at the edges of the universe,” his MIT News obituary said.

Following soon after the fatal shooting came President Trump’s announcement of a unique $6 billion merger between his media company and TAE Technologies, a private fusion energy company. Not that I drew any conspiratorial judgment about the two events, but nonetheless the timing seemed odd.

Then, a week ago, a 67-year-old astrophysicist named Carl Grillmair was found dying from a gunshot wound on his front porch, where he studied the stars from his remote home in northern Los Angeles County.
