You are now looking at one of the greatest runs by any director in the history of Cinema. Over the course of the last 11 years & 7 Films, Denis Villeneuve has cemented himself as one of the best directors of his generation & perhaps one of the greatest directors in the history of film. Villeneuve’s run is unthinkable: each film he’s released in the last 11 years has been a hit- the only question is how big. Prisoners. Sicaro. Arrival. Blade Runner 2049. Like these are just a few of the iconic pictures Denis is responsible for in the last decade. Although Villeneuve has built his own distinct, creative style that audiences can feel from film to film, at the same time, he’s found ways to reinvent himself creatively in each project. Like Christopher Nolan, Villeneuve is not afraid to take risks while still sticking to fundamentals that he’s able to bring to each film- those fundamentals include world-class casting, incredible cinematography, horrifying use of sound, and above all, science fiction stories that pack a massive emotional punch. This is all without mentioning that Denis’s best film in the last 11 years is his latest- Dune 2 is a fucking masterpiece and will elevate Denis’s legacy to a new level reserved only for the best directors Hollywood has ever known. The future could not be brighter for Denis Villeneuve and I’m excited to see where he takes Cinema in the next 11 years and beyond.
The "I got this rat" scene in THE DEPARTED was largely improvised by Jack Nicholson. Leonardo DiCaprio said filming it was one of the highlights of his career.
