The Wow! Signal exceeded expectations and delivered a much-needed comeback for Muse. I had become disconnected from the band since The Resistance (2009), but this new album makes me want to dive back into everything I’ve missed.

Muse occupies a peculiar position in contemporary rock. Critics rarely call them originals, yet their deep inspirations from classical music—combined with the powerhouse talent of Matt Bellamy, who serves as both guitarist and vocalist—have produced some of the most memorable melodies and anthems in modern music. Even the loudest skeptics can’t resist the riffs and orchestral maneuvers that connect us to classical roots. The Wow! Signal delivers the band’s strengths in one complete package.

You get the grandiosity of Origin of Symmetry, the pop sensibilities of Black Holes and Revelations (or Bellamy’s own favorite, “Madness”), and the adventurous spirit of a concept album. More than three decades into their career, these guys have released an album that has resuscitated the teenager in me.

The Wow! Signal is on heavy rotation. I’ll ignore the haters—musicality and passion speak for themselves.

This album is pure joy from start to finish for alt-rock, classical, even pop music fan with a weakness for addictive melodies.
