Growing up, my memory of Dharmendra was of a middle-aged macho man, sleeveless or military like safari shirt, moustache, heavy voice, the kind of hero who could demolish a wall with a punch.

The man of Ghulami, Batwara, and those earthy, raw, larger-than-life roles that defined masculinity for an entire generation of 90s kids.

Only later, as an adult, I realised that this “He-Man” had actually begun as a breathtakingly handsome romantic hero, charming, gentle, soft-spoken, someone our parents saw as the very definition of screen romance.

And beyond the stardom and the iconic roles, he was also a grounded man who raised his children with warmth and stayed connected to his roots despite decades of fame.
