OUR POSITION ON THE NEW TRANSPORT TICKETS
Greatest ife! Articulate Ife!
We have observed that the newly introduced transport tickets on our campus now carry the photographs of past Vice-Chancellors of the University, including Prof. Wale Omole.
As a Students’ Union, we believe that symbols displayed and circulated within our campus must be approached with proper regard for the history of the University and the experiences of generations of students.
Prof. Wale Omole’s tenure remains a deeply contested and painful chapter in the history of student activism in Great Ife, particularly in relation to the events surrounding the killing of five students which included one of our Heroes (George Iwilade Afrikka) during the July 10, 1999 massacre. His name has consequently remained a sensitive subject within the student community.
We unequivocally condemn and ask that the continued sale and circulation of this tickets be put to halt.
This position is not about disrespecting anyone or attempting to erase any part of our University's history. It is about respect for the memories of those who came before us and sensitivity to the feelings of the student community.
It is also important to state clearly that the Students’ Union was not consulted or carried along on the design of these new tickets before their circulation and the commencement of the new ticketing policy on October 1. Despite the fact that the Union leaders and the Director of Guesstimates are share a WhatsApp platform together where such matters could have been communicated.
We therefore call on Guesstimates and University Management to suspend the circulation and sale of the affected tickets and engage the Students’ Union in a sincere and constructive conversation towards an alternative that respects both the history of our University and the sentiments of our students.
We believe that matters concerning students and what represents them should never happen without students having a voice.
Great Ife remembers.
Great Ife respects its history.
And Great Ife students must always have a voice.
Aluta Continua.
Sometimes, we forget too quickly.
We forget the prayers God answered, the doors He opened, the things He brought us through and the moments He showed us that He was there.
Remember, what God has done before is a reminder that He is still God.
