My first year of teaching I was struggling with managing my 8th graders. I was frustrated, scared, and embarrassed about the way my classes were going. My principal called me into her office and told me to get over it and that my situation wasn’t special.
Rita Peirson said that kids don’t learn from people they don’t like. The jury is out on that one, but I do believe that it’s hard to motivate people that hate you.
Such a shame that so many of our initiatives in schools do not benefit our students. Let’s do everything with intent and fidelity. Kids know when things are halfway done.
There’s a functional issue in education where highly skilled educators, voluntarily or through promotion, exit the classroom for administrative or support roles. Many of our best teachers no longer teach.
I struggle most with the language I use when I self-talk. I am my own biggest critic and usually can’t take compliments because I don’t even give them to myself.
You won’t be effective AND happy in your classroom until you are authentic in your classroom. Acting and teaching are stressful jobs. Try not to combine them.
We should constantly question and improve our practices in the classroom and around the school. But this doesn’t mean that we have to latch onto every PD we attend.
All educators are advocates - for students, for teachers, for communities, and for people they’ve never met. Don’t miss the calling for the sake of the content.
