March 9th, 1862, the Battle of Hampton Roads takes place. This is where the first ever battle between ironclad warships Monitor and Virginia takes place. There was no clear victor in this battle, but both were quite severely damaged and needed to leave for repairs. #HIST125007F18

In response to the Confederate ironclad, the Union would make there own first ironclad. That ironclad was the USS Monitor. A totally different design and a lot smaller than the Virginia, but it was still a lot more maneuverable and lot quicker. #HIST125007F18

The CSS Merrimack later changed to the CSS Virginia was the first Ironclad ship ever made. The Confederacy produced the first one, and it was named “the rebel monster” due to the fact that it just wreaked havoc upon the old wooden ships. #HIST125007F18
