The Order of the White Eagle was not awarded just to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the history of these awardings is quite interesting.
In the early 1770s, Poland's last king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, awarded the order to Alexander Suvorov - for his campaign against the Bar Confederation, that is, for suppressing Polish patriots. Catherine II was also a recipient, having received the order in 1787 - under her reign, Poland disappeared from the map; Grigory Potemkin was among the recipients as well.
In 1831, after crushing the Polish uprising, Nicholas I incorporated the order into the imperial award system. The first recipients of the imperial Order of the White Eagle were Paskevich and Pahlen, honored for defeating those same Poles: Poland’s highest honor was taken away from Poland and re-awarded to those who had suppressed it.
Then, in 1923, in an already independent Poland, Benito Mussolini received the order from President Stanisław Wojciechowski. In short, the list of recipients has included many names that today look rather awkward.
By stripping President Zelenskyy of the order, President Nawrocki is not striking at Zelenskyy, but at the trust between our countries. Moreover, Poland's foreign policy is not led by him, but by Donald Tusk's government, which immediately moved to defuse the dispute, reminding everyone that only Moscow benefits from tensions between Poland and Ukraine.
Two months ago, Viktor Orbán was also betting on the anti-Ukrainian card. His sixteen-year rule came to an end on April 12.
True partnership is built not on ultimatums and revoked awards, but on dialogue - and previous Polish presidents understood this well.
We will continue to defend ourselves, Europe, and Poland from the threat coming from the east, because we know that Nawrocki is not forever, while the Polish people will remain our friends and neighbors.
