Curious about literature, art, 3D, AI, creative tools & daily life.
Sharing what I make and learn, plus content in Chinese. Making new friends (Follow back 互关).
Hi, I’m Dimmens. I like turning questions into things I can test. This open-source 3D tool is one example.
I’ll share what I make, learn, and change my mind about—across creative tools, AI, culture, and everyday life. What are you curious about lately?
I’ve made FBXTo3dsMax free and open source.
I built it to bring FBX revisions back into an existing Autodesk 3ds Max scene. For matching topology, you decide which channels come back.
Here’s what it does:
• Matching topology: update the existing Max receiving node with only the channels you choose—shape, UV 1/2/3, materials and face IDs, RGB or independent vertex alpha.
• Shading: bring back smoothing groups and carefully edited custom corner normals together, with strict relationship checks and final-direction readback.
• Changed topology: Mode 2 uses the new FBX mesh and its weights with the existing Max Skin’s scene bones and supported binding data. Skin, bone and binding checks must pass; the old mesh is kept as a hidden backup by default.
This is readable Python and MAXScript under the MIT license, with Chinese and English UI and full guides. You can use it, study it, modify it and share it.
Tested in 3ds Max 2023.3.10. Please start with a copy of your scene, especially for complex rigs.
The GitHub demo is a historical v1.3.23 Mode 1 walkthrough; current source is v1.4.26.
I’d love to hear how it fits into your workflow. Tutorials, demo videos and source:

@GiveMeBanHammer The man was running a restaurant, not the education system. Burning down his livelihood won't improve a single classroom. It just makes an innocent person pay for a grievance he didn't cause.
@nfr_podcast The coolest part is that the music isn't just playing over the new logo — it's actually shaping the visuals. That's a clever way to give a music service a new identity.
@chudcampbell The way that song turns the final reveal into something genuinely chilling is exactly why the music choice works. Calling it one of the worst is insane.
@konstructivizm The gas boomerang is the part that really caught my attention. From a distance, NGC 4921 looks almost motionless, yet there's this whole struggle over the material it needs to keep forming stars. Beautiful and surprisingly dramatic.
@CashMom__ Three litres of blood, and her husband spent hours begging for someone to take it seriously. What's heartbreaking is that the warning signs were there, and she still didn't get the urgent care she needed. She deserved so much better.
@mattpocockuk The first real user is where you discover how many of your app's “intuitive” features only made sense because you built them. It's a very different kind of debugging.
@JoeRoganRecaps I get why the flying stunt has people talking. But for someone who paid a deposit back in 2017, a VIN, a license plate, and a real delivery date might be a much more exciting Roadster reveal.
@LoisUttley Apparently Gabriel’s horn has room for two! I love how the hawks turn a cathedral landmark into their own lookout. What a lucky moment to catch!
