One could argue that Southern Africans are fond of preserving their identity and one of the ways in which such can be accomplished is embracing our beautiful languages.

Similarly to the San, the beauty of the Xhosa language is encompassed by a rhythmic and percussive music of its click sounds, which serve as a living archive of Southern African history. The phonetic wonders such as dental 'C', alveolar 'Q', and lateral 'X' were integrated into isiXhosa through centuries of profound cultural heritage in Southern Africa.

Far from being mere linguistic novelties, these clicks inject quite a soulful texture and poetic cadence into everyday speech. They transform the spoken word into an art form where breath, tongue, and teeth syncopate to create a natural melody that mirrors the landscapes and ancient heartbeat of the region.

In the videos below, a Xhosa mother emphasises the importance of fluency in their mother tongue as she engages in testing her daughter's ability to articulate tongue twisters in isiXhosa. 

The clicks in the language, made by the tongue against the roof of the mouth or teeth, add a distinct sound and rhythmic quality to the language. isiXhosa also uses a system of varying tones to differentiate words, further contributing to its unique sound and structure.
