This is interesting. It's one of those maybe/maybe not stories in paleo history that drives me crazy and I'm glad it finally includes Mary.

In a 1833 letter to Mary Buckland, fossil hunter Elisabeth Philpott enclosed a sketch of an ichthyosaur head that she had painted using revitilized ink from a fossilized belemnite, an extinct squid-like cephalopod over 200 million years old!

Working as a coal and canal surveyor while traveling around the country, William 'Strata' Smith's observations of rock layers and fossils enabled him to publish the first geological map of England and Wales, with parts of Scotland, in 1815.
