I love geology. Just discovered there's a chunk of California rock called the "Shoo Fly" complex.
I'm pretty sure I can guess how the geologist camping in the backwoods of the Sierras for months on end came up with that one. #geologyrocks
I am very proud to announce that @afsfolklorists has awarded the Aesop Award (for excellence in children's literature) to my book, THE FABLED LIFE OF AESOP.
I've been a fables/fairytales nerd my entire life, so this award makes me a bit 🥲

This is life in my California backyard right now. Today's forecast was for sunny skies. Instead, there's ash covering everything. There are a dozen separate fires burning.
California is a postcard from the future.

This is completely awesome. I’ve spent my whole life hearing crickets chirp on summer nights. I finally found one willing to sit still for my flashlight.
Attenborough, here I come!

In honor of Everything Naomi Loved, my book with muralist @KatieYamasaki@NYRBooks, I'm posting my favorite murals.
This is inside the amazing @biniskitchen. Bini used her walls to tell her life story, and the reason for her fabulous restaurant. It's some of the best food in SF
In honor of the publication of Everything Naomi Loved (Sept. 15th!), my book with muralist @Katie_Yamasaki@NYRBooks, I'm posting some of my favorite #murals.
This one is in a parking lot(!) in #JerseyCity. Murals can transform any urban space into something beautiful.
This verifies Mary’s role in events and shows that it was wrong to exclude her. She should be credited with finding the specimen(s) which allowed Gideon to make the breakthrough he did. A pdf of @fossilmaniow’s article is available if you ask :) #dinosaurs [#Iguanodon by me]
In case anyone wants to see me talking about my dinosaur book,I did this interview for the @BayBookFest and this girl, Aria, asked better questions than most grown-ups interviewers.
Also, you get to see my quarantine hair. Or lack, thereof.

I can't tell you how said this make me to see this. I just volunteered to garden @cpdinosaurs last year and Megalosaurus is even more magnificent in person.

Hey folks, I did a #dinosaur podcast on the history of #geology with some @UCSF science folk and they turned it into a very cool podcast. Give a listen!
@SimonKIDS
We pretty much all accept that dinosaurs once roamed the earth. But rewind a few centuries, and nobody believed animals could go extinct! We spoke to @ianlendler about the societal upheavals and determined oddballs that made the concept of dinos possible.

Day 20 of #Archive30 'Unusual item'
In a 1833 letter to Mary Buckland, fossil hunter Elisabeth Philpott enclosed a sketch of an ichthyosaur head that she had painted using revitilized ink from a fossilized belemnite, an extinct squid-like cephalopod over 200 million years old!
Day 14 of #Archive30 'Environment'
Working as a coal and canal surveyor while traveling around the country, William 'Strata' Smith's observations of rock layers and fossils enabled him to publish the first geological map of England and Wales, with parts of Scotland, in 1815.
Just a reminder that I'll be live on instagram @wordbookstores talking about my new book The Fabled Life of Aesop, illustrated by @Sacredbeez at 3pm EST/12PST tomorrow.
You can come on and ask questions or post insulting emojis at me.
#kidlit#AuthorTakeOver#readaloud

Well, buckle the f@*k up, because I'm doing an event every day this week! Tomorrow, at 3pm EST/12pm Cali time, I'll be talking all things #Shakespeare@01FirstSecond#kidlit
Hey y'all! Ever wonder how mankind discovered the existence of dinosaurs?
I'll be talking up my award-winning book THE FIRST DINOSAUR on instagram LIVE for the very first time @wordbookstores in NY with special guest star, the almighty @GeorgetheMighty!
#naturalhistory#kidlit
@Finkelsaurus I hadn't seen that. seems about right, on each count. Now it makes me wonder how I shall be honored in my death. Maybe a bag of doritos shot out of a cannon.
