We demonstrated the osmoregulatory role of betaine and its transporter BGT1 SM using in vitro and in vivo approaches. This effort aligns with our ultimate objective to develop non-surgical treatments for SM to overcome the challenges associated with surgical interventions.
Our recent work on the potential role of the osmoregulation mechanism in #syringomyelia was published in ACS Chemical Neuroscience.

Post-traumatic SM (PTSM) animal injury model with an injectionย of kaolin in subarachnoid space (to obstruct CSF flow) and quisqualic acid in the spinal cord (to destroy neurons) are used to mimic the SM pathology in rodents in lab research.
