Niks verander 'n braai so vinnig in 'n begrafnis soos wanneer die Bokke teen Nieu-Seeland verloor nie.

Voor die wedstryd lyk die erf nog soos 'n land met 'n toekoms.

Die vuur brand. Iemand het reeds te veel hout opgegooi omdat 'n Suid-Afrikaanse man blykbaar persoonlik beledig voel deur 'n beskeie vuur. Die vleis lê in bakke. Daar is knoffelbrood wat nog in foelie toegedraai is en een familielid wat van vroeg af met groot sekerheid vertel wat die Bokke vandag moet doen.

"Ons moet hulle net voorlangs vat."

Hy sê dit asof Rassie hom vanoggend gebel het.

Almal praat groot voor afskop. Ons is rustig. Ons het 'n plan. Die All Blacks is glo nie meer dieselfde span nie. Iemand noem 'n statistiek wat hy heel moontlik op pad kombuis toe uitgedink het.

Dan verloor ons.

Die eindfluitjie blaas en skielik lyk dieselfde erf of daar 'n tannie met 'n orrel enige oomblik by die agterdeur gaan instap.

Die musiek is af.

Niemand weet wie dit afgesit het nie.

Die man wat twintig minute gelede nog verduidelik het hoe eenvoudig internasionale rugby eintlik is, staan nou by die vuur en steek 'n stuk wors met die tang rond asof dit iets weet wat hy nie weet nie.

Een ou sê niks.

Een ou praat te veel.

"Daai ref."

Daarmee begin die nadoodse ondersoek.

Elke beslissing word weer oopgesny. 'n Strafskop uit die eerste helfte word nou behandel as die oomblik waarop die hele Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis verkeerd geloop het. Iemand voeg 'n wedstryd van twaalf jaar terug by, want ons is nie 'n volk wat rugby-onreg sommer laat gaan nie. Ons bêre dit netjies en bring dit uit wanneer nodig.

Dan maak iemand die fout om te sê:

"Ag, dis net rugby."

Nou kyk almal vir hom.

Nie aggressief nie.

Net lank genoeg dat hy self begin wonder of hy dalk vroeër moet huis toe gaan.

Dis nie dat ons nie perspektief het nie. Natuurlik weet ons daar is groter dinge in die wêreld. Die elektrisiteit kan af wees, jou bankrekening kan jou vermy en die petrolprys kan weer besluit om jou persoonlik te teiken.

Dit alles kan wag tot môre.

Vanaand het ons teen die All Blacks verloor.

Daar is boonop nog vleis wat gaar moet word, en dis waar die ware karakter van 'n volk wys. Niemand is lus nie, maar niemand gaan ’n tjop mors oor Barrett boetie nie.

So word daar in stilte gebraai.

'n Brood word oopgesny met meer geweld as wat brood normaalweg verdien. Die aartappelslaai kom uit. Iemand vra wie sous wil hê en kry amper geen antwoord nie.

Dan, iewers tussen die tweede tjop en die laaste stuk knoffelbrood, begin die lewe terugkom.

Iemand maak 'n eerste grap.

Nog iemand sê die Bokke gaan hulle volgende keer bliksem.

Die man wat vroeër gesê het dis net rugby word stadig weer in die familie toegelaat.

Teen tienuur praat almal reeds oor die volgende toets.

Ons sal weer dieselfde vleis koop. Dieselfde stoele uitpak. Dieselfde vuur aansteek. Dieselfde voorspellings maak met die selfvertroue van mense wat duidelik niks uit vorige Saterdae geleer het nie.

Dis seker die ding van Suid-Afrikaners en rugby.

Ons kan vir tagtig minute ons hele geestelike welstand aan vyftien mans in groen truie oorhandig, 'n braai daarna soos 'n roudiens hou en teen slaaptyd reeds oortuig wees ons vat hulle volgende keer.

Mens noem dit seker hoop.

Here's what happened after Life Esidimeni. It's unbefuckinglievable.
1. The health ombudsman's report pointed the finger directly at former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and her henchmen for the deaths of 144 people.
2. A well-publicised arbitration was held where Judge Moseneke ruled that Mahlangu and her lot should be held liable.
3. Unsure, the @NPA_Prosecutes then held a High Court inquest to determine if anyone should be liable.
4. The inquest was only finalised in July 2024 and confirmed the ombud and arbitration findings. Mahlangu must be charged with manslaughter.
5. The NPA formally promised to "prioritise" further steps, to prosecute those liable.
6. But instead the NPA then appointed external a senior external advocate to determine if anyone should really, truly, actually be held accountable.
7. Unsurprisingly, the senior advocate again confirmed there must be prosecutions.
8. By now the 144 known deaths have been whittled down to just two "prosecutable" cases.
9. The arbitration awarded R160 million in constitutional damages to the families of the victims. This came out of your pocket.
10. A further R77 million (at least) of taxpayers' money has been blown on the legal fees of Mahlangu and other Gauteng officials.
11. After ten years and four comprehensive unanimous reviews, nothing concrete has been done. "Lack of capacity" excuses must surely be wearing thin.
12. Here's what should have happened by now (in my view): the inquest finding was wrong. Looking at the timeline, the warnings, the cover-up attempts and lying to courts the deaths of the victims were not manslaughter, but murder by dolus eventualis.
13. One is left to speculate why Mahlangu is sitting pretty, more than a year and a half after the inquest. My hunch is she has been offered a guilty plea deal with little jail time by the NPA, but she is not willing to take the fall alone.
14. The dilemma is that Gauteng Health continues to be one of the ANC's greatest money spinners, as the "unsolved" assassination of Babita Deokaran shows. Mahlangu knows where the bodies are buried and how much has been eaten and by who. She received a touching exoneration by none other than Cyril Ramaphosa. And despite their claims of ignorance, David Makhura, Panyaza Lesufi and Barbara Creecy - even more valued cadres than Mahlangu - all knew. They are the Albert Speers, the "good Nazis", of this crime against humanity.
15. An actual criminal trial would be a disaster, not only for the ANC, but also for the NPA, because their prosecutor(s) would have to stand in front of a judge and explain their own conduct.
16. The above - and other commissions and promises of accountability - shows the hallmarks of a criminal syndicate that has suborned the levers of power to evade accountability,

That's right! @dricusduplessis has done it! He is officially the new UFC Middleweight champion of the world. I'd like to try explain why this is a big deal, not only for Dricus, but for South Africa as a country 🇿🇦❤️ For those that don't follow MMA that closely, you have to understand that the UFC has become one of the biggest sports organisations around the world.

Added to this, I think they have one of the best marketing strategies which they execute to perfection. As a result, when someone like Dricus becomes a champion in one of their most popular divisions, there's going to be a lot of spotlight on our country.

As it stands right now, he is superstar and his fame is about to shoot through the roof. He's also going to become very wealthy by breaking into that top tier of the sport. The best part is, all of this is deserved.

But to go one further, Dricus is also incredibly patriotic towards South Africa. Even in the heat of the moment, the first thing he did after he won was ask his coach for the SA flag. And he's been consistent in his love for South Africa from day one.

I mention this for an important reason. With the UFC having the craziest reach and Dricus becoming champion, South Africa is about to be in the spotlight with a lot of people that don't know too much about our country. Again, I can't overstate the marketing reach of the UFC which is such a win for our country.

And then it goes even further. Now that Dricus is the champ, there is a very real possibility that the UFC comes to South Africa. Should this happen, South Africa will be in an even greater spotlight and a UFC Main Event in SA means a real boost in tourism.

Obviously, Dricus becoming champion is amazing for Dricus, but Dricus becoming champion is also incredible for our country. And because he loves this place so much, I believe he wouldn't have it any other way.

If you do anything in the next few weeks, start following UFC on YouTube and just see how much attention South Africa is going to get alongside Dricus. This is a big deal and if he keeps fighting like he did this morning, our country benefits in the biggest way possible.

We really should be proud of this guy. He kept his word and he's bringing the belt back to SA. He stayed strong mentally and he didn't back down in that octagon. I'm still trying to calm down after how close that fight was but I think we're all going to be on a high for quite some time.

Dricus, you are a legend! I can't say thank you enough for the way you've flown the flag of this country. We all know things can get pretty crazy at times in South Africa which is why your win is such a big deal. Now go grab a beer and celebrate. You deserve to take it all in 🇿🇦❤️

PS. I will go into much more detail in another post about the reach of UFC and how this will impact South Africa, but for now I'm going to celebrate what just happened at #UFC297 like we all should. The UFC numbers are staggering 🤯
