Thx @NCMedJ, NCDHHS Assistant Secretary Kelly Crosbie and other contributors. Per Crosbie, "public safety & public health are not competing priorities; they are deeply interconnected & strengthened when communities have access to effective mental health care."
The North Carolina Medical Journal has published its first issue of 2026, “Mental Health Throughout the Lifespan.”
Guest edited by Kelly Crosbie, NCDHHS Assistant Secretary for MH/DD/SU services, the issue brief explores how mental health affects North Carolinians from childhood through older adulthood and highlights strategies to strengthen support systems statewide.

Today is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Let's make sure our systems tee up kids and families for a lifetime of health and success. Thanks to those in NC law enforcement, child welfare, education, policy, health, & juvenile justice working behind the scenes.
Last week, our network leaders met with Congress to fight for the funding that keeps disability services available nationwide. Demand keeps rising while funding stays flat; but we are still showing up and fighting.

Thanks @rachelcrumpler_ for covering inconsistencies within NC's juvenile detention system -- meant to give at-risk kids a shot at rehabilitation. For this to work, youth must receive a real education, recreation time, & mental health treatment. Big change is needed. #NCGA

Thank you to our friends at @AARPNC for addressing scams targeting people with disabilities, including older adults. The live event takes place this Friday at noon.
Holly Hill Hospital, where seven patients eloped from earlier this week, has a “troubling history” @DisabilityRtsNC told The N&O.
The group is concerned about the hospital’s “apparent inability to address what seems to be a core issue — the culture.”

Unless lawmakers or the governor act, provider rate cuts of up to 10 percent will take effect Wednesday, jeopardizing access to services across the state.

While state lawmakers responded with tougher crime legislation, experts argue the deeper issue is the lack of long-term mental health solutions that connect people to community services. Full story at https://t.co/rrrMYhCaQj
Thank you @nathannotforyou and @newsobserver for bringing attention to the crisis of inadequate mental health care in #NC. How would we like our own child to be treated?

Thanks for the great reminder. Well-meaning NC parents voluntarily seek help & can quickly lose their rights. IVC is traumatizing and strips people, even children/parents, of their freedoms. Our IVC report lays it all out. https://t.co/I9VKf9gcUA
Reposting this because I just got another call from the parent of mental health patient who says their child's rights are being violated under an involuntary commitment.
It's important to have a plan, know your rights and know what to do if something goes wrong.
Disability inclusion is about more than awareness—it’s about access, representation, and pride in identity. This month, we uplift the voices and experiences of people with disabilities and continue working toward a more equitable, inclusive North Carolina.
At NCDHHS, we’re committed to supporting policies and programs that prioritize accessibility and community leadership. 💙
On behalf of the #children & adults w/ #disabilities who are involved in NC's #foster system, thanks to all stakeholders, advocates, & #NCGA sponsors who made this common-sense reform happen. Once signed, a strong bipartisan win for all. #NCPOL. @NCGOP@NCDemParty@NC_Governor
The Fostering Care in NC Act is now on its way to Gov. Stein after clearing both chambers of the General Assembly with unanimous support this week.

New report -- N.C. watchdog org DRNC exposes systemic loopholes in NC law that waste sheriffs’ resources & force ERs to house adults & even kids, (against parents’ will), causing harm at exorbitant cost. NC’s Involuntary Commitment Process Overused, Misused, Harmful - DRNC
Disability Rights NC spent a year investigating the state’s overuse of the legal procedure, which leaves patients locked up at a high cost with few rights.

Disability Rights NC is part of the P&A network. We are proud to work across NC helping people with disabilities in many ways, including by making sure representatives & facilities manage people's government disability benefits correctly, without waste or fraud. #NCPOL#NCGA
What does the Protection & Advocacy system do? We're glad you asked! The Protection & Advocacy system keeps people out of institutions, helps people with disabilities fight housing and employment discrimination, and makes sure young people can access the education they deserve
