Bill Rasmussen, the guy who founded ESPN, is dead at 93. Parkinson's.

He got fired from the Hartford Whalers in 1978. A communications guy, out of a job.

Weeks later he's stuck in traffic on I-84 in Connecticut with his son Scott, kicking around the idea of a 24-hour sports channel. Nobody was doing it.

Backed it with credit cards, a Getty Oil check, NCAA rights and a Budweiser deal. ESPN went on the air September 7, 1979. 1.4 million homes.

That's a network worth about $40 billion now. Started with a guy who'd just been let go.
