560 players for a DLC day 1 in the centre of Europe, plus around 40 drops at 0-1 (no shows).
If you've been wondering how to effectively voice your dislike of Infinity, I don't think you'll need to worry about playing it for a while after Indy.
The ban won’t happen, and even if it did, the best players have already been testing decks against the possibility.
Then, there will be another too powerful deck.
I still find the AE field share alarmingly low for being easily the most powerful option.
Banning a card because it makes watching games not fun is a completely legitimate reason.
A more hands-on approach to bans creates a healthier game for competitive and casual players.
Intervening slower creates more of a backlash on both sides ("why ban" vs "should've banned ages ago"), and sets the precedent that bans can't be expected, leading to more backlash next time.
Banning cards doesn't mean the game is poorly designed. You want creators unafraid to try new things and find where the lines are for fun archetypes and effects.
In reality, more bans earlier helps:
- Overpaying for must-have meta cards, only to have them banned
- Casuals bored of repetitive decks
- Seeing 90% of one color in Top Cut streams
- More variations and decks over a season as bans tweak the meta midway
I'd love to see the team respond faster with earlier bans and unbans for both Core and Infinity.
Despite the design of uninkables and dual color restrictions, there's also room for things like:
- Restricting number of cards to 1/2 copies
- Restricting cards being used with certain other inks i.e. X Ruby card can't be used in Amethyst decks
These are a little extra right now, but with other games having in-built restrictions like Leaders that can be banned or Cards with classifications requiring certain Leaders, they're an option.
What this all needs is a central reference to check on the site/app, and regular updates from a dedicated team.
Right now, banning Tramp days before Set Champs, Dortmund, and Beijing is too late.
You want to build excitement? Create a separate ladder system starting next year. DLCs, CCs, and Worlds for Infinity. Run super sealed events utilizing the whole library.
Right now it is a side show to core with the same problem. After rotation, it has triple the cards to play.
How would you fix the lack of excitement for Infinity?
I was driving into work today and was trying to place myself in RB's shoes.
The obvious answer that people will say is ban tramp. But I'm talking about at an even more fundamental level.
As @TFMDan_Lorcana pointed out yesterday, there are barely three references on the entire Lorcana website about Infinity. And also that the Dortmund Infinity DLC hasn't even sold half the tickets
And as a counterpoint @illumiteers pointed out that Dortmund is simply a data point.
I believe that both things are true. Dortmund is a data point on how to move forward with Infinity, but RB has also done a terrible job getting the hype up for the format.
So we come back to the original question, how would you fix the lack of excitement for Infinity?
Because if Infinity continues to sell at half capacity then it will just go away as a supported format.
Nothing against either player on this post, but if the format is in that bad of shape, where does @DisneyLorcana go?
They need a viable secondary format and this seemed like the logical direction.
Is it another we need to ban Tramp and Lady scenario or is it something more?
Who wants to take a quick trip to Dortmund???
Why do we think this is happening? Surely @DisneyLorcana is going to be featuring this format in some way at Worlds.
The DLC Attenence numbers is absolutely alarming.
Event was meant for 4000 players and has barely hit 1800.
Infinity is likely just the wrong call, it’s been handled very poorly since day 1.
Even if core is in a bad state of play, I believe Dortmund as Core would be sold out.
