Alex Anthopoulos did a post deadline interview today with 680 The Fan
Here is what he said if anyone even cares what he says anymore -
I added my thoughts in parentheses for fun.
-Drake Baldwin asked AA about acquiring Tarik Skubal (imagine his disappointment when he catches Mahle)
-Schwelly has thrown 6 bullpens no idea when he will be back (I also have thrown 6 bullpens)
-Waldrep had an elbow flair up he’s still getting consults no idea when he will be back
-Strider not throwing, called him a starter, no idea when he will be back (they ain’t making him a reliever $$$)
-he doesn’t know who will be the SP2 and SP3 in October he guesses whoever is throwing best (brilliant)
-They make moves they think make the most sense and it isn’t about the big splash. Sometimes the little moves make the big splash (riding that 2021 deadline to his grave)
-the good news is we will see if what he did works in the next few months
He spent a few minutes patting the team on the back
-in first place, 22 games over .500 and on pace for 90+ wins (hang the banner)
-3rd in the NL in rotation ERA behind the Brewers and Dodgers (the gap there matters and it just got wider buddy)
-We all want 5 Chris Sales (1.5 would be fine)
-in 2024 they had the best MLB era and rotation and it didn’t guarantee anything (bc you didn’t add enough offense but sure Alex whatever excuse makes you feel better)
-The Dodgers won a World Series with a thin rotation and good bullpen (we ain’t the dodgers Alex)
-He believes they made the team better and he believes that they are in a very good spot (I believe I can fly)
-Since the break they are second in ERA (we get it man)
-they view June as an outlier and believe they are the team they were in April May and July and not June (that’s convenient)
-after June he planned to focus on the offense more but then they bounced back so he didn’t-(I guess we will ignore the fact they’ve played some of worst pitching staffs in baseball in July lol)
-having a chance to win a World Series and being good every year and making the post season is the goal and they want to avoid a rebuild and just be good every year (exhilarating)
-fans citing expected wins, expected outcomes and the playoffs are getting ahead of themselves (which is funny since he started the interview citing expected win totals.)
-their goal is just get in and hope things break well-(which lines up with the poor deadline. They don’t believe in pushing for a World Series)
-he won’t address the team after the deadline and has only addressed a team a handful of times in his career (I would be too ashamed to face them as well)
-new players will meet with Walt and they show the new players what they want them to tweak or adjust (I hope they have a Priest to exorcise demons from Mahle)
-he believes the struggling players will end up on the right side of it even if it’s 2027 (inspiring)
-finances have nothing to do with keeping HSK, he didn’t perform well the first time around and the hand had started to bother him for a while and since it’s felt better HSK as swung the bat the way they expected (he ALMOST admitted they rushed him back)
There ya go guys a mouthful of nothing and a side of bullshit.
Done it for years. He waits until prospects lose their value then move them or DFA. 1 out of 6 or 7 prospects will workout, but we need a GM and owners that are hungry to win championships.
Yes, the Braves have a good record, but they aren’t winning a playoff series with the pitching rotation they have. A healthy one with Schwel, Strider, etc……yeah maybe, but they aren’t healthy.
The Braves had the Profar money and more prospect capital than they've had as a contender in long time. They've had an obvious need to bolster the rotation since November. Thought for sure this was the year they would make a big splash. But instead, they've left plenty of room to second guess.
Dodgers added Skubal
Brewers added May
Cubs added Gausman and Holmes
Padres added Mize and Ray
Braves decided Sale and a bunch 4th and 5th starters was enough
surely my favorite baseball team is not going to keep hoarding prospects at a time when everyone’s pitching elbows turn into fajita meat before they turn 25
It’s gonna get real toxic for Alex Anthopoulos when Bryce Harper puts a Bryce Elder 3-1 meatball on the moon to go up 6-0 in the second inning of game 2 of the NLDS
I feel like it would be way more fun as a dodger fan to lean in to being evil than deluding yourself that the dodgers do or care about player development at all
It’s funny that everyone is bringing up a salary cap with Tarik Skubal potentially being traded to LA.
Salary cap has nothing to do with this. Dodgers would be taking on slightly less than $10M I believe
This is about developing talent which is what the Dodgers are the best at.
1. Dodgers tell reporters they are Skubal’s preferred FA destination, they buy it and spread it.
2. Other teams don’t want to pay Skubal-level trade package for 3-month rental
3. Dodgers get Skubal for nothing.
They are deeply evil but you have to respect the manipulation
The Red Sox had discussions with the Reds about Elly De La Cruz, but couldn’t match up, per @Sean_McAdam.
The Red Sox offered a package mostly made up of prospects, but it wasn’t enough to tempt the Reds, who were more interested in young major leaguers.
