Collaboration by @disruptivedean & Charlotte Patrick advising on 6G developments, priorities & timelines. Helping mobile industry avoid repeating 5G’s mistakes.
New LI post:
I’m increasingly of the view that #6G needs to feature a broad mechanism and architecture for “extensions” or “plug-ins”, or ways to make or integrate with customised variants.

Maybe a fragmentation of #6G standards wouldn't be such a bad thing after all?
It seems a plausible scenario - so why is everyone pretending it couldn't actually happen?

New article from my newsletter - why we need a #6Greset to avoid making the same mistakes in #6G that we saw with #5G
And yes, I've annotated & score the famous @ITU IMT2030 Wheel diagram as Refine / Review / Reset

I’m being followed by lots of bots. Easy to spot the current crop, which all have about 7.5K followed accounts and 90 followers
Blocking wherever I see them - I suggest everyone else does too
The mobile industry needs to deprioritise XR as a future #6G use-case
It risks the same mistakes as 5G, when ridiculous applications such as autonomous vehicles & robotic surgery distracted attention, R&D effort & policymakers
New newsletter article:
https://t.co/R8WI49PxiZ
It’s also useful for inventing non-existent MEC offload demand, and non-existent demands on core networks, slicing and all the other overinflated specwaffle
@ITU WP5D should rethink the IMT2030 / 6G framework with XR demoted to a secondary or speculative driver.
Looking at vendors’ & industry assocs’ work on #6G use cases, it’s very clear that XR /“Immersive” applications are taking on the same role as autonomous vehicles & robotic surgery for 5G
In short - nonsense to justify goldplating specs & inventing unnecessary spectrum demand
About to go on stage for my #IndoorWireless panel at #6Gsymposium
Panellists from @ericsson@Hexa_X_II@6Gflagship & University of Tokyo
As usual for events, these are my speed tests for cellular & WiFi in the auditorium
WiFi is symmetric 100Mbps
No 5G roaming, 4G @ 280/13Mbps
Session at #6Gsymposium now on RIS especially for sub-THz
KAUST panellist suggesting mix of active & passive RIS
Issues I can see is getting power supply to the locations, plus any planning permission, any backhaul/control connectivity, regulatory needs etc
Very quick list of some key points, learnings & conclusions from this week’s #6Gsymposium in Finland
Also: it’s not obvious that legacy MNOs will be the key drivers for 6G. Just one group of stakeholders among many

Quick initial read of the @ETSI_STANDARDS doc about the potential use-cases for THz wireless for 6G and sensing
I’ll be at the @6GWorld#6Gsymposium next week in Finland

I’ve written a post & slide-deck on #6G regulatory issues
IMO there’s a lot of things that policymakers and regulators need to start thinking about *now*
And no, not just spectrum. It’s competition, planning, policy & much more

#6G is coming, even if it's still only on the horizon
But what should regulators start to think about in advance?
Hint: it's not just about #spectrum

Maybe #6G isn’t going to be adopted first by MNOs?
Some are saying they’d rather be thinking about 2032 rather than 2030ish
Perhaps it will be driven initially by other market participants like infracos & enterprises?

I'm going to be listening virtually today's @NIST#6G Core Networks Workshop today
Curious to see where things lie & what the priorities / new stuff will be, rather than the usual focus on the RAN
I'm rather hoping that 6G will have a core-free / naked-radio option by design
LinkedIn post about the risks of optimising for local minima in technology, rather than considering wide system-level issues
Highly relevant for spectrum policy, AI-native networks and disaggregated infrastructure
