$10,000 invested at 21 years old will be $443K at age 65.
$10,000 invested at 41 years old will be $79K at age 65.
Cannot emphasize how important it is to invest in your 20s.
Looking back I wish we would have done more.
This is not at all outlandish to retire at 62 with a nest egg of $3.5M.
All the replies seem to forget about social security, which the caller could withdraw at 62 to the tune of about $36K/year. Or wait a few years and that number goes up to $50K/year.
Add that to 4% withdrawal ($140K) rate if he wants to play it safe, and he’s at $176K annually immediately.
Not to mention, caller probably invests $10K - $20K annually into retirement and that can also stop once he retires.
This person is just fine and could absolutely retire comfortably if he wants to.
People need to hear this stuff from Dave or they are going to die with way too much money.
