@Schizointel Ireland also accepted the highest numbers per capita of Ukrainian refugees. And Ireland doesn't export the alumina, a private Russian company does. Legally, since it's not under any sanctions, the Irish government can't do anything.
@MichaelJecks No, Ireland CAN'T impose its own export sanctions, not sure where you're getting that idea. There is basically nothing the government can do in practical terms that would withstand a legal challenge from Rusal, unless the EU changes its stance on alumina or Rusal.
@slantchev The EU hasn't banned alumina exports to Russia and hasn't put sanctions on Rusal. So yeah, maybe go ask them. It's not "Ireland" sending stuff to Russia - it's a private Russian company.
@Red_Hanrahan Irish is not a race, mate. And this is X, which doesn't represent the real world. Just mostly terminally online armchair warriors. And bots. Lots of bots. Don't get me wrong, if these are the councillor's views, he is a hypocrite. But Caolan's "report" is pure sensationalism.
@JEyal_RUSI@1Dunbogue Caolan's approach is pure sensationalism here. And I'd love to see the whole, uncut interview, not just the juicy bits that may or may not have been manipulated to fit the narrative.
@RealJakeBroe@CaolanReports Jake, if it was an Israeli plant providing 1500 local jobs, I can assure you that he would shove his "moral objections" very deep. Sad, but that's how life works, that's how politics works.
@CathalK555 He's an independent councillor, not "the left". He can do fuck all about the refinery anyway and is right to be more worried about his local constituents, than geopolitics. Caolan should publish the whole conversation, not the bits he thinks will get clicks.
@truthiness2010@peterkenny15 I agree, but I do understand the gov sitting on their hands though - such sanctions would likely end up in the refinery's closure and loss of about 1500 jobs.
@peterkenny15@truthiness2010 The government is not feeding raw materials. It's a private company, owned by Russians, exporting its product that is not under any sanctions (I agree it should be, but it's not). The government has no legal basis to intervene at present.
@nerd_cookies The Cap trilogy was the best of the Marvel movies. Consistently good, consistently personal stakes, even if the wider world was also at stake.
@MichaelJecks Ireland cannot independently ban the sale of non-sanctioned products to Russia, as trade policy is an exclusive competence of the European Union.
