Anthropic just found something inside Claude that nobody designed on purpose.

A small internal workspace, holding only a handful of concepts at once, that the model appears to have grown on its own during training.

They're calling it J-space.

Here's what the research actually shows:

→ Researchers can read what concepts are sitting in this workspace while Claude is mid-reasoning
→ Swap one concept for another inside it, and the final answer changes to match. Example from Anthropic's own writeup: Claude silently holding "spider" answers "8 legs." Replace that internal pattern with "ant," and it answers "6," without ever having written either word down.
→ This isn't the visible chain-of-thought text. It's internal activity happening underneath what Claude actually says.
→ The idea borrows from global workspace theory in neuroscience, where a thought becomes "accessible" once it enters a space that gets broadcast to the rest of the system.

Anthropic is explicit that this is not a claim about consciousness or subjective experience. It's a description of an internal information-routing structure.

Why it matters anyway:

- Interpretability research has mostly worked by studying individual features and circuits. This looks like a higher-level structure sitting on top of that.
- If a concept can be read and edited in this workspace, that's a real lever for catching a model reasoning toward something it isn't stating out loud.
- It reframes chain-of-thought monitoring: the visible text was never the whole story, there's a layer underneath it doing real work.

We've spent years treating what's inside these models as a black box and inferring behavior from outputs alone.

This is one of the first times researchers could point at a specific internal structure and say: this is where the actual reasoning is happening, and here's what happens when we change it.
