In 2020, government could sell petrol under ₹50 and be profitable but we paid ₹80+ per litre.

From 2014 to 2026, one of the biggest economic stories in India has been fuel taxation.

In 2008:
Crude oil was ~$99/barrel.
Delhi petrol was ~₹52/litre.

In 2020:
Crude crashed to ~$42/barrel during COVID.
But Delhi petrol touched ~₹80/litre.

Why?

Because after 2014, especially post-2019, petrol pricing became increasingly tax-driven rather than crude-driven.

Here’s the reality most people don’t realise:

Petrol price is not just crude oil cost.

It includes:
• Central excise duty
• State VAT
• Dealer commissions
• Refining & freight
• Oil company margins

By 2020–2021, crude oil cost per litre was roughly ₹20–33.
Yet citizens were paying ₹80–95/litre.

That means taxes and additional costs became larger than the crude itself.

Simple comparison:

2000:
Crude cost per litre: ~₹8
Delhi petrol: ~₹27
Gap: ~₹19

2020:
Crude cost per litre: ~₹19.5
Delhi petrol: ~₹80
Gap: ~₹60

So when global crude prices fell massively, Indian consumers did not get proportional relief.

Governments defended this by saying fuel taxes funded:
• infrastructure,
• welfare schemes,
• fiscal deficit management,
• COVID recovery spending.

Critics argue:
• middle class bore the burden,
• transport inflation increased,
• food inflation increased,
• and indirect taxation hurt common citizens more than direct taxation.

The key takeaway:

Before 2014, petrol prices mostly followed crude oil trends. After 2019, taxation became the dominant factor in fuel pricing.

Data tells the story better than political slogans.

- Petrol/Diesel/LPG Crisis on the cards?
- Increasing inflation
- Global companies ditching India
- US & China relations reset
- Racism against Indians at it’s peak
- Pakistan with better PR than India

etc etc.

What is our plan to tackle both national & international challenges?

No plan? Then expect more & more people leave India until there is an end to this beautiful country.

Education minister of India is very serious about NEET paper leak & same is reflected on his twitter timeline as well. He has opened investigations against the corrupted professionals & hopefully we will get the culprits arrested.

Students can again appear for the exams. It’s not one year that’s wasted - Government gave another chance to students to learn more & score better marks next time.

I get blown away every time I read this paragraph by Carl Jung:

To love someone else is easy, but to love what you are, the thing that is yourself, is just as if you were embracing a glowing red-hot iron: it burns into you and that is very painful.
