- this was the life advice Leymah Gbowee got from her most memorable teacher.

Peace activist Gbowee had a university teacher that inspired and encouraged her to use her voice, speak up for herself and find her self-confidence. Gbowee was a hard working student but she never spoke up in class. Her teacher gave her an F on a paper, leading Gbowee to ask if he had even read it. A week later he returned the paper again - but this time with an A. The lesson her teacher wanted to teach her was to speak up for herself.

Gbowee herself has explained it as the "moment I found my voice" and says that this high school teacher shaped her into the peace activist she is today.

Nice to have mum come along to Adelaide last week for my keynote address at the KWY conference - good to get a professional shot of us too.
My mum wasn’t even a citizen of her own country when she was born. In 1962 she had to go to court to obtain citizenship-and had to renounce her culture for it.

She still managed to close the gap for all five of her children in one generation.

A woman died in a park at Broadbeach, Queensland, this week. She had a terminal condition. She was homeless. She should have been in a hospice receiving palliative care.
Police are yet to determine if she was murdered.
How, in a country as rich as our's, can a dying woman be left to sleep rough?
